Workgroup AI for all
fair algorithms instead of mythical black boxes
What?
We invite bright minds from interdisciplinary fields to explode the myths behind ethical algorithms and AI. The workshop series aims to create a new ai-for-all-award.
Here is a little example of a flawed algorithm. If you translate the German expression for "she works" into Finnish and back into German, the translation changes to "he works". This is but one instance of a biased or even sexist algorithm.
Why?
Algorithms are everywhere. They help us decide what to watch next, with our shopping choices and even with finding the right partner. Even without our awareness of their presence, they shape our world. And this has consequences. For the most part, algorithms were not designed with the best interests of users in mind but have been portrayed as if they were. In truth, algorithms serve the interests of those that create them and any notion of an ethical algorithm is a fallacy. Fiction has painted dystopian scenes of robots taking over the world and of uncontrolled AI. The question we must ask is how much have we already made this reality by surrendering too much power to algorithms?
The world has changed in the past decade and events have come to pass that few, if any, of us could ever have predicted. What comes next, however, could reshape our society in ways even more unexpected and profound. Algorithms were at the heart of some of the shifts that have passed and will certainly form the crux of the changing world to come, indeed to potentially an even greater extent. Our view is that it is vital for people to interrogate and reconsider the ethics of algorithms and AI and to move away from our current blind trust in them.
Who?
The workgroup is organised by Sophia Saller, researcher at German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and DPhil in Mathematics from Oxford University, and Markus Pins, lecturer in Ethics at Erfurt University and founder of the Engagementpreis-Stiftung.
Where?
The ai-for-all award 2023 will be confered in Düsseldorf, Germany
When?
The next workshop takes place in spring 2023. The award ceremony follows subsequently.
